Grade 3 Native American Block

Erin has just started her Native American block and we have begun with the Woodland people who lived in longhouses. She is enjoying this so much and I have discovered some lovely books written by Bonnie Shemie that are beautiful accounts of the dwelling places of different peoples. They are lovely to read.

In this photo we have made a fire and we are cooking stick bread. It is really tasty and easy to make. Just take some flour, water, salt to taste and butter. Mix this all together until you have a nice dough.

Find a long stick, sosatie sticks work well, and shape your dough around the end of the stick like the dough in the photo. Make sure it is not too thick on the stick or it will take too long to cook. Hold your dough on a stick just above the flame and it will cook nicely. Try not to let your stick go into the flame of it wiil burn and so will your dough. Check after a while and you will have lovely bread. It tastes delicious. Please be careful of the flames, I'm sure you will be.

This was a lovely activity for our Native American block if anyone has any other suggestions for activitites, I would love to hear them.

  3. How funny to read this. Just a few minutes ago, I was searching for ideas of things to cook on a stick over the fire. I saw the idea for bread on a stick on another site but your photo helped me wrap my brain around the idea. Thanks!
