Solar Halo in South Africa

Yesterday was an amazing day as far as weather phenomenon went! I was out in my car looking for a parking space when I noticed everyone pointing up at the sky. I stopped my car, got out and had a look too. There was a huge ring around the sun, truly massive. It was a brilliant and amazing sight to witness. Halos are created by ice crystals that are present in the clouds. When the sun shines on these ice crystals, this beautiful halo effect is created. You can see more halo photos and read more about Solar Halos here.
The Halo above our house, you can see how large it was...

We also had an amazing rain storm last night.

Have an amazing day.

  12. Just - wow. Wow. I think it would have frightened me a little. I can see you, closing your eyes and holding the camera up to the sun - hoping you got the composition right.

By the way, I just want to tell you this: because of you, I now have friends for whom I feel great and real affection - one in Australia, one in Canada, one in the southern US states - and I never would have met them if it hadn't been for what you're doing with your blog. what an amazing thing. What an amazing service to us all.

  17. Wow what fantastic shots!!!! We have seen that here in FNQ and my weather expert husband of mine wants to know how cold it gets over there in SA??? I told him its about the same as us but he is not convinced about the ice crystals causing the phenomena???? Are you near Johannesburg?? It doesn't snow there does it?

PS I have enjoyed creating new friends thru your blog also :-) Saw K over at Julies LCR originally....wool is keeping us all connected :-)

  18. Hi Baa-Me Kniits
We live in Johannesburg:) Our winters can sometimes reach -3 C. It doesn't snow here really, the last time it snowed was in 2007 and it was just for a few hours:)
I am so glad you have also made new friendships through this blog, how wonderful:)
    Take care
    Linda

  19. @pattyjeans here. My mother always called these Sun Dogs, usually we see them in winter here in the Canadian prairies - and I was always told that it meant that colder weather was coming.

  20. Oh, the things you teach, Linda! That solar halo is astounding. And the friendships you help forge, with rainbow strands of wool (a blend of analogies from K and Baa-Me Kniits). Thank you.
