Emergency Rooms and Chickens...

Today has been a bit of a hectic day, it started off with Richard leaving early to go for a mountain bike ride with a couple of his friends.  Later in the morning Erin ran into the lounge shouting... all I heard was 'dog bite'. At first I was trying to understand how there could have been a dog bite, but by this time, I was running rather fast to the front of our home to where Richard was standing. He had been bitten twice by a dog while he was out riding! It looked really painful, he was bitten on his calf by a sleigh dog. People were training their dogs out in the plots (farm areas), not far from where we live. These sleighs have wheels as we have no snow here in South Africa... As the sleigh was approaching him he stopped to allow it to pass easily. Well, the dog in front stopped and bit into his leg! The owner of the dog was amazed and couldn't believe it. Richard then rode home and after we had a good look at the bites decided he really needed to go straight to the emergency room. There his wounds were cleaned and dressed. Phew! I am just thankful he is ok, he is sore but OK, it could have been much worse...

We have also had a sick chicken for a couple of days, sweet Penny, the white one above. She has been very slow in her movements and her comb lost its colour and started to droop yesterday. We have been watching her closely, keeping her inside the chicken house and taking her to drink water often. I am so happy to say that by the end of today, her comb is a lovely bright red colour again and she is walking around eating and drinking water by herself!

Time to make tea and sit with my love...

Wishing you all a peaceful Sunday... xo

  4. It sounds like Richard and Penny are both on the mend. What a frightening experience for Richard! Glad that Penny is doing better. It's always difficult to see an animal not doing well.

  8. Oh what a fright! I am glad that it wasn't too serious x
Thanks for the chicken info, we have had chickens for only a few weeks and I had no idea to look at their combs for health clues.

  9. How awful that Richard was bit while out on his bike. That must have been such a shock. I hope he is doing well and able to ride again soon.

  11. My hubby bikes alot too...we know all too well the perils of bike riding in the countryside! Thank goodness he's alright.
The only experience I've had with a sick chicken was when our rooster Sir Lancelot developed a case of laringytis last spring...I have to admit, it was pretty funny hearing him try to crow...my secret weapon for chicken illness is oil of oregano...I put some drops in their water when I think they might be suffering from anything...knock on wood so far so good!

  12. Yikes! Glad your husband is okay. My poor niece was attacked and bitten on her face. She had to have reconstructive surgery. Those dog bites are scary!

Also glad your Penny is feeling better. So much I don't know about chickens and I grew up with them! Can't wait to have some of my own some day...

  14. Oh dear that dog bite sounds like it was nasty, such a shock too when it is unexpected. I bet Richards leg is sore today, dogs have nasty dirty teeth. Glad your chickee is back on track :-)

  15. A dog bite is such a violent thing. The pierce and tear is terrible, but the hostility is even more so. I wonder what got into that dog? It could have killed a child with a bite that hard. Poor Richard. I wish I could do something.

I wonder if the white chicken was just dehydrated? But why? Why would she not have been drinking enough? Oh, the world is so darned complicated and mysterious.
