I have been wanting to share these photos with you since we returned from holiday in Clarens. I'm not entirely sure what this little creature is in the above photo, he has a short tail and is terribly sweet. We named him Humphrey, I think the name Humphrey suits him tremendously:) Each morning, Humphrey would scoot out from the thick foliage onto the lawn and eat the grass. He was so entertaining to watch, just look at those eyes...
Ahhh and this beautiful bird, I think, is called a Marico Sunbird. He would fly around our home all day long landing only for short periods of time to feast on the Red Hot Poker flowers that were flowering in the garden. He was so beautiful and had such a melodious call.
We have these flowers growing here at home, but I think I must divide the roots and vary the areas where they are planted to attract more of these creatures to our garden.

That bird is beautiful! Red hot poker is only an annual here, it won't survive the winter..too bad.
ReplyDeleteI live down the road from Wabi Sabi Wanderer, and I assure you, we ARE snowblind. That little rodent is hilarious!! What a character...and yes, he's a Humphrey for sure. Love the colours of the bird and the flowers.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, I was marveling to my husband about how exotic your wildlife is and how mundane ours seems. He says it's all a matter of what you're used to (I'm not entirely sold on this idea). Apparently, white squirrels are out of the ordinary most places in the USA. They're common here - I've grown up with them. It's hard to imagine a squirrel, raccoon, or chickadee as being exotic to anyone, though.

ReplyDeleteCould he be a wombat, I wonder? Or are those only Australian? I love fuzzy things that eat grass - I wish I could. And the bird - so lovely. We had a rat outside once. The dogs went mad, trying to find him under the deck, and I wasn't too thrilled. But I found him one day and wished they weren't so un-socially-acceptable. Humphry was a deal cuter, probably because of the tail problem. I am looking forward to a time when lions and lambs lie down together - I want to be in that pile.

I've not seen them in the Free State before, only in the Waterberg and Mpumulanga, but I can't imagine why they wouldn't also like the sandstoney cliffs of Clarens?

ReplyDeleteHumphrey is about the size of a guinea pig, he isn't too big so I'm not sure if he is a Rock Hyrax. I wish I could find out what he is though because I want to knit him:)
