Minature Knitted Mittens Pattern, a Christmas Tree Decoration

We have been making plenty of Christmas decorations for our tree and home from felt over the last few days. I had some oddments of red wool and I knitted up these tiny mittens that will hang on our tree. They could even look sweet on a garland. I am still working on the red and beige project and will share it here soon, but for now I have this mitten pattern to share with you:)

Materials:

Oddments of red wool, mine is hand spun but DK is perfect too

5mm circular needles or DPNs

Wool needle for sewing up

Some red and beige wool to braid the strand holding the mittens

Pattern:

Cast on 14 stitches and join for knitting in the round

Round 1: Knit

Round 2: Purl

Round 3: Purl

Round 4: Knit 6 stitches and then place the next 2 stitches on a piece of waste yarn, continue knitting to the end of the round.

Rounds 5-9: Knit

Round 10: (Knit 2 together, knit 1) across the round

Round 11: Knit

Round 12: Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 1, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 1

Bind off stitches.

Turn the mitten inside out and sew the top of the mitten closed neatly.

Pick up the two stitches that have been on the waste yarn with one needle and pick up another 3 stitches opposite these 2 stitches with the other circular needle, this will form the thumb, (you will be knitting in the round for the thumb).

Knit these stitches in the round for 3 rounds.

Then knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 2 together.

Break yarn, thread wool onto a wool needle and thread the needle through the stitches, pulling tight, finish off.

Sew in all the ends.

With 3 strands of wool, 2 red and 1 beige, braid a strand. Tie each end and sew them into the inside of each mitten.
Now they can hang on your tree as a cute ornament:)

WIP Wednesday, Felt Christmas Tree Ornament Tutorial, Handmade Holiday 2010

Today I have been working on another handmade Christmas ornament for our Christmas tree this year, a felt Christmas tree ornament.  It is an easy little sewing project and fun to do...  Thank you so much for all of your amazing suggestions of what to put in our Advent calendar bags, just wonderful!

Materials:

Wool felt

Scissors

Embroidery thread

Sewing needle

Colourful beads

Fleece

Ribbon

Actual template size.

I used our Christmas tree biscuit cutter and drew around it to make my template. I cut out my two little trees in felt.

Sewed them together in blanket stitch and then decorated my tree with various colourful beads, by sewing them on.

Attach a ribbon to the top of your tree and you are finished!

Felt Gingerbread Man Christmas Tree Hanging Ornament, Decoration Tutorial

Today we made another felt Christmas ornament, a hanging felt Gingerbread Man. He is really easy to make and the blanket stitch gives great detail for his edging.

Materials Used:
Brown wool felt
Fleece for stuffing
Pink thread for sewing on the blanket stitch
Colourful fleece for eyes and mouth
Sewing needle
Scissors
Ribbon for hanging him up
Gingerbread man biscuit cutter
Black marker pen
Felting needle

Template for your Gingerbread man, actual size.

I drew around my gingerbread man biscuit cutter to create my template and then I cut it out, placed it on my felt and drew around the template in black marker pen. I cut out two exactly the same for the front and the back.

Placed both sides together and started sewing around the gingerbread man in pink blanket stitch. Leave an opening to fill with fleece.

Once you have sewn around your gingerbread man, fill with fleece.

Sew the opening closed and needlefelt some buttons, eyes and a smiling face onto your felt .

Attach the ribbon at the back and he is finished! Perfect to hang on your Christmas tree...

Felt Christmas Tree Tutorial

The girls and I decided to make some felt Christmas trees and we have put a little tutorial together for you:) Jenna designed the templates and cut them out for us. These little trees look so sweet on the mantelpiece or you could attach a loop at the top of the tree and turn it into a Christmas tree decoration to hang on your tree... They are also awesome pin cushions for the festive season...

Materials:
Felt
Cardboard Templates, large triangle and small triangle for base (we just recycled some old boxes for this)
Embroidery cotton
Sewing needle
Fleece
Felting needle
Colourful felt
Scissors

Dimensions for triangles:
Large triangle: 5 inches tall, base 3 inches.
Small triangle: 3 inches on each side.

Cut out your templates from cardboard, one large one for the three sides and one small one for the base of your tree. Place your template on your felt and mark out three triangles for the sides. Mark out one small triangle of the base. Cut out your felt triangles and start sewing them together as seen in the photo below. We have used  blanket stitch to sew up our trees, blanket stitch is so pretty and you could use a bright thread to make it stand out.

Once you have sewn up all the sides, fill with fleece and sew on the base of your tree. They are so quick and easy to make and really look effective standing together in a row.

Erin attached a star and needlefelted some decorations onto hers as well as sewing her blanket stitch in a bright colour for extra effect...
