Minature Knitted Mittens Pattern, a Christmas Tree Decoration

We have been making plenty of Christmas decorations for our tree and home from felt over the last few days. I had some oddments of red wool and I knitted up these tiny mittens that will hang on our tree. They could even look sweet on a garland. I am still working on the red and beige project and will share it here soon, but for now I have this mitten pattern to share with you:)

Materials:

Oddments of red wool, mine is hand spun but DK is perfect too
5mm circular needles or DPNs
Wool needle for sewing up
Some red and beige wool to braid the strand holding the mittens

Pattern:

Cast on 14 stitches and join for knitting in the round
Round 1: Knit
Round 2: Purl
Round 3: Purl
Round 4: Knit 6 stitches and then place the next 2 stitches on a piece of waste yarn, continue knitting to the end of the round.
Rounds 5-9: Knit
Round 10: (Knit 2 together, knit 1) across the round
Round 11: Knit
Round 12: Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 1, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 1
Bind off stitches.

Turn the mitten inside out and sew the top of the mitten closed neatly.

Pick up the two stitches that have been on the waste yarn with one needle and pick up another 3 stitches opposite these 2 stitches with the other circular needle, this will form the thumb, (you will be knitting in the round for the thumb).
Knit these stitches in the round for 3 rounds.
Then knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 2 together.
Break yarn, thread wool onto a wool needle and thread the needle through the stitches, pulling tight, finish off.

Sew in all the ends.

With 3 strands of wool, 2 red and 1 beige, braid a strand. Tie each end and sew them into the inside of each mitten.
Now they can hang on your tree as a cute ornament:)

Happy knitting:)

WIP Wednesday, Felt Christmas Tree Ornament Tutorial, Handmade Holiday 2010

Today I have been working on another handmade Christmas ornament for our Christmas tree this year, a felt Christmas tree ornament.  It is an easy little sewing project and fun to do...  Thank you so much for all of your amazing suggestions of what to put in our Advent calendar bags, just wonderful!

Materials:
Wool felt
Scissors
Embroidery thread
Sewing needle
Colourful beads
Fleece
Ribbon

Actual template size.

I used our Christmas tree biscuit cutter and drew around it to make my template. I cut out my two little trees in felt.

Sewed them together in blanket stitch and then decorated my tree with various colourful beads, by sewing them on.

Attach a ribbon to the top of your tree and you are finished!
Enjoy:)

Christmas Sweater / Jersey, Knitted Ornament Pattern, Handmade Holiday 2010

Today I knitted and needlefelted this little Christmas Sweater Ornament for the holidays. I am going to be gifting these to my close friends and family to hang on their trees or around their homes for Christmas and we will also be hanging these in our home too:)

Materials:
Natural yarn, mine is a handspun Merino
4mm circular needles
Wool needle for sewing up
Colourful fleece for needlefelting
Felting needle
Wire for hanger

Pattern:
Cast on 28 stitches and join for knitting in the round.
Purl 2 rounds.
Knit 14 rounds.
Now we are going to knit the front of the sweater as a row instead of in the round. Knit 14 stitches and place the other 14 stitches on a stitch holder to be knitted later. These will make the back of the sweater.
Knit the 14 stitches that are on the needle, knit 4 rows in stocking stitch, then purl 1 row and knit 1 row.
Cast off.

Place your saved stitches that were on your stitch holder onto a needle to knit the back.
Knit in stocking stitch for 4 rows.
Purl 1 row, knit 1 row.
Cast off.

This is the body of the sweater. Sew up the shoulders of the sweater, leaving an opening for the neck.

Arms:
With your circular needles, pick up 12 stitches around the armhole of your sweater.
Continue knitting in the round to knit the sleeves.
Knit 14 rounds for the sleeves, purl 1 round and knit1 round.
Cast off.
Repeat above for the other sleeve.

Sew in all your ends.

Here is the little sweater / jersey with all its ends sewn in and the little hanger I made from a small piece of wire.

Once I had finished, I needlefelted a little Christmas tree in a pot onto the front of the sweater.
Enjoy!
Happy Monday:)

Felt Gingerbread Man Christmas Tree Hanging Ornament, Decoration Tutorial

Today we made another felt Christmas ornament, a hanging felt Gingerbread Man. He is really easy to make and the blanket stitch gives great detail for his edging.

Materials Used:
Brown wool felt
Fleece for stuffing
Pink thread for sewing on the blanket stitch
Colourful fleece for eyes and mouth
Sewing needle
Scissors
Ribbon for hanging him up
Gingerbread man biscuit cutter
Black marker pen
Felting needle

Template for your Gingerbread man, actual size.

I drew around my gingerbread man biscuit cutter to create my template and then I cut it out, placed it on my felt and drew around the template in black marker pen. I cut out two exactly the same for the front and the back.

Placed both sides together and started sewing around the gingerbread man in pink blanket stitch. Leave an opening to fill with fleece.

Once you have sewn around your gingerbread man, fill with fleece.

Sew the opening closed and needlefelt some buttons, eyes and a smiling face onto your felt .

Attach the ribbon at the back and he is finished! Perfect to hang on your Christmas tree...

Or on your door handles around your home:)

Enjoy!

Our Garden's Bounty and Christmas Ornaments...

We have been busy harvesting our peaches from our modest peach tree. Erin was helping me to pack them into our basket to be taken inside to finish ripening and later enjoyed by our family. We tasted some today and they are exceptionally sweet, very exciting indeed. Our peach tree is quite small but has given us the most juicy fruit this year. We also fed these fruit trees worm tea at the beginning of their fruiting season and the results are astounding...

Kye has a favourite tree in the garden that he loves to climb, a Pride of India (Koelreuteria Paniculata), it is such a pretty tree when in bloom and just the perfect size of a budding mounatineer...

Erin was busy with handwork today, she gathered her materials, decided on a project and went about putting everything together, she made a felt purse, with an embroidered leaf and sewed on a button on the other side in matching green to fasten...

Tomorrow evening we will be visiting with good friends for a supper and a carol evening in the park... We all have to bring a gift that can't cost anything to make and it needs to be some form of recycled clothing... A few days ago I saw a lovely Thrifted Christmas Tree that Morningsunrae had made, you can find the tutorial here at The Long Thread. I thought this tree would work quite well for the Christmas gift swap at our carol evening. So today, Jen, Erin, Caiden and I sat down together at the craft table and created this special tree from thrifted clothing and scarves. It was wonderful to work together and create something from recycled clothing. We were all thrilled with how it turned out, it is really quick and easy to make...

Handmade Christmas Ornaments...

Today we decided to make these citrus and cinnamon Christmas ornaments. Our home has this beautiful fragrance wafting throughout, it is heavenly...

Erin is busy with her ornament...

We decided to hang them in our kitchen so we can enjoy them...

To make:
You need a few oranges,
Cinnamon sticks,
Golden thread, or thread of your choice,
Thick wool needle,
Pin hammer,
Acorns etc...

We dried out our orange slices in the oven on a low heat and added some ground cinnamon to the slices.
Knock the wool needle through the cinnamon stick to make an opening and then thread the needle with your strand of golden thread and attach the orange slice to the stick. We also now added an acorn etc... to our ornament and tied them all together. Tie a little knot with your thread and your ornament is ready to hang up for everyone to see... Enjoy!
